What photo resolution do you need for prints and posters?

Use a print-size pixel chart, understand PPI and cropping, and check whether an original phone photo has enough detail for a calendar, card, or poster.

Start with pixels, not the file size in megabytes

Find the image's pixel dimensions, such as 4032 by 3024. A file's size in megabytes depends on compression and format, so it cannot tell you the printable size by itself. A screenshot or a copy saved from a message may contain far fewer pixels than the original camera file.

Pixels per inch, or PPI, describes how many image pixels fit into one inch of the printed photo. Divide the usable pixel width by the printed width in inches, then do the same for height. The smaller result is the limiting dimension. Printer DPI describes a different part of the printing process and is not a substitute for this calculation.

Use 300 PPI as a planning target, not a guarantee

At 300 PPI, an image area eight inches wide needs 2400 pixels across. This is a useful planning target for detailed prints viewed close up, not a universal acceptance threshold. Viewing distance, the image itself, paper, and the printer's requirements all matter. A sharp file with fewer pixels can look better than a large file with motion blur.

The chart below is simple multiplication at 300 PPI. It refers to the photo area, not necessarily the whole sheet. A calendar photo occupying half a page does not need to fill the pixel dimensions of the entire calendar. These are general examples, not a list of products currently available to order from Memluxe.

Account for the crop before you judge the result

A 4032 by 3024 image has a 4:3 shape. If you fill a landscape 10 by 8 inch frame, the crop uses roughly 3780 by 3024 pixels, giving about 378 PPI. Filling a 20 by 16 inch frame with the same crop gives about 189 PPI. The file did not change; the printed area doubled in each direction.

Zooming into a small face uses only part of the original image and lowers the effective resolution further. A collage can help because each photograph prints smaller, but fitting the entire group into one large slot may require a better original or a less aggressive crop.

Do not confuse resizing with recovering detail

Changing a resolution label without resampling does not create new image detail. Resampling adds or removes pixels; enlargement can make a file larger without recovering a face that was out of focus. Treat automated enhancement as a result to inspect, particularly around eyes, teeth, lettering, and small patterns.

Compare candidates at similar printed sizes, not only as tiny phone thumbnails. Look for motion blur, focus, compression blocks, and noise. If the important part of the photo is soft, a smaller print or a different photo is often a better choice than increasingly aggressive enlargement.

Review the actual design before committing to print

In Memluxe, use the photo-resolution review before downloading your design. A warning is a reason to inspect the placement, find the original file, reduce the zoom, or choose another photograph. It is not proof that every unflagged image will print beautifully.

Inspect the exported PDF, verify the physical size, and check the chosen printer's bleed and safe-area requirements. A border changes the image area; trimming can remove details at an edge. For an important or large print, a physical proof is the final check that a screen cannot replace. Memluxe print ordering is not open yet.
